Nov 2,  2004 - "Hey BA - What's Rubbing Your Fur The Wrong Way Now?"

I linked to some photos on yesterday's page, of Conor's foot, along with some photos of the "blood bucket" he filled, more than once, after he lost after his first encounter, ever, with a sting ray.

I was on my way into the water when he came out - limping and bleeding.

There were a few  supposed  LJ Shores Locals -

[the very same "locals" that I've helped in many ways]

- hanging out by Inside Wave Dave's Truck [where else?] -

but they, even though they wouldn't be going out for at least 30 minutes, could not be bothered with helping the kid.

Another strike, in my book, against some of these guys!

I was the - first shift - hot water boy, [thanks Rudy for the hot water] then I went to work - no surfing for me this day.

Comstock was the - second shift - hot water boy, and he's the one who noticed the bleeding was not stopping.

Even though Comstock has no idea of where the closest hospital is, he was thinking about taking Conor to the ER.

Rebecca was the next on duty - third shift - she took Conor, and his blood bucket, to the emergency room and insisted that treatment of the wound came before a bunch of paperwork crapola!

"So BA get to the point - You, Comstock, and Rebecca helped some kid you didn't know, big deal!"

The big deal is - I've surfed all over California, Hawaii, Central America, a little bit on the East Coast, and a little bit in Mexico - and if I were in trouble in the water or on the beach, or on the road [or maybe in a bar, or in The House Of The Rising Sun], it seemed that, some how / some way, a local surfer was there to pick me up or loan me a $$ or two -

I guess one could call it Aloha, or Good Samaritan, or Karma, or Soul, or Spirituality, or Luck, or Bribery, or Payola, or Something, but real surfers - real locals - seem to have a bond / something in common with other surfers from other areas - regardless of where the "other area" happens to be -

How does one define "real surfer / real local?"

I don't know - it's just one of those things that "just is."

If you got it / get it - you know it -

I have a very difficult time trying to explain it [this Aloha - for lack of a better term - thing] but it's real -

Not everyone who surfs gets "it" nor do all surfers "get" the concept of aloha, or whatever that special thing is -

Maybe, if more than just a few people got it, this would be a much better world!

I'm getting a headache trying to describe or define "it" but I'll continue with this tomorrow??

By the way - Twang was pretty darn good yesterday evening!

There was only one minor collision - which could have been a lot worse - and, I almost captured the elusive "Green Flash."
